The Rich Kids Of Lagos Part 41

‘Haaa!’ Aunty mi, Kilowade?! Why this? You do not need to show your annoyance like this, in front of our in-law. Let’s all take it easy and have breakfast as suggested by Alhaji.’
Aunty Tokunboh’s beady eyes had already feasted upon the well-appointed quarters and knew that at last, her labour of love for Aduke was about to pay serious dividends. She had never really cared for that Peter boy, so she was firmly on Alhaji’s side on this.
She had always suspected that Aduke could get a better suitor but she hadn’t thought it possible that Addy would strike gold like this. She had to ensure that Mama Aduke did not mess this up!
‘Ehhh, Alhaji,’ she started ‘hope I can call you this?’ she asked him with a smile.
‘This is fine’ he responded with a corresponding smile of his, one that did not reach his eyes.
Addy could read him very well now. She was certain that there was trouble brewing in that head of his. Her mind was also not at rest. Would Gabbo recognise Peter’s name? If he did, would Peter be in trouble? She had to play it really cool right now. Her mind was in turmoil as she prayed that her mother’s unguarded utterances would not put an innocent boy in trouble. As her thoughts roamed freely, her aunty’s voice cut through her reverie.
‘Don’t mind Mama Aduke, Alhaji. She’s just upset that you have circumvented our traditions. Anyway, all of that can be easily resolved’ said Tokunboh, unaware of the signs that Aduke had already seen in the Alhaji’s eyes. ‘Anyway, let us do as you have said, Alhaji. Let us all cool down over breakfast’
The party of four moved from the bedroom to the dining area where Bassey, the cook, had outdone himself. It was a buffet fit for a king and Aunty Tokunboh, impervious of the moods around her, piled her plate full of food. As Addy looked at her Aunty’s plate, she felt something akin to shame. Her hitherto worldly-wise Aunty Tokunboh was acting like a buffoon!
Aunty had put sliced yam, with moi-moi and pasta all on one plate! What the hell was wrong with her? Aduke suspected that her aunt had also been hit by the Gabbo charm which, in all honesty was not really turned on today. Perhaps, it wasn’t the charm, maybe it was the obvious display of affluence that was getting to her aunty.
‘So Alhaji’, how is business these days?’ asked Aunty Tokunboh who must have thought she looked cool by chatting confidently with the rich industrialist. Addy shook her head because there was no way anyone could look cool with a string of pasta dangling down the side of her overloaded plate. As she drowned out the conversation, she turned her attention to her mother, who stood resolutely by the table refusing to eat.
‘Maami, won’t you eat?’ asked Aduke
‘No, Madam. Thank you ma’ was the sarcastic response. ‘You know me, Aduke’ she continued ‘I am a straight forward person. I don’t play games. Remember that the only step remaining for you and Peter to get married was for him to bring his people to us which you had both planned to do once you concluded your courses. It is this same Peter who paid for those courses with his hard earned money oo!’ said Addy’s mum.
‘Ewo wa tun l’eleyi? Which one is this one? Have you been carried away by the luxury? Do you not know it is better to start off from scratch with a man than marry a ready-made one?’ asked her mother with passion, tears gathering in her eyes at the unfairness Aduke had meted to her former lover.
‘Maami, it is not what you think. The thing with Peter is that…..’ began Aduke
‘What about Peter?’ asked Gabbo, who apparently had finished his conversation with Aunty Toks and had walked over to the mother and daughter, with the aim of convincing them to eat something.
He stood close to Aduke and lightly put his arm around her shoulder. To any casual observer, this was a genial posture, one that could be expected from two lovers, but Addy knew better. ‘So, who is this Peter? Is this the same Peter Owhoko that works with us or another one?’ he asked softly
‘Ha! Mo daran! Aduke! This girl has killed me! So, you dumped your fiancé for his boss? Have you no heart? Do you want to kill this boy or do you want the boy to get into trouble? Do you want God to punish us all? Have you no conscience?’ asked her mother in rapid succession. Shocked by her daughter’s callousness, Aduke’s mum decided to leave. ‘Tokunboh! Tokunboh! Fi ounje yen s’ile nisi yi! Leave that food right now, let us go!’ she ordered
She faced her daughter again, ‘Aduke, I am so disappointed. We raised you better than this. I hope you do not regret your greedy actions someday soon’ said her mum who began to walk towards to front door briskly.
Gabbo immediately left Addy’s side and tried to catch up with the elderly woman whose long strides had carried her to the front door.
‘Mama, please permit me to say something. Today, I have seen in you something that I thought our people had lost – integrity. You have by your words and reactions reassured me that indeed Aduke is from a good home and that she has a very good mother. Whatever failings she might have as a human being did not emanate from you. Madam, you did your job well. I see traces of you in her everyday and I can only hope that one day, she becomes half of the woman that you are today. She will join you later today. I promise you’ the sincerity in his voice and eyes were very convincing.
Aduke’s mum paused and looked into Alhaji’s face, as though unsure if this was a ruse. Her heart told her it wasn’t, so she acknowledged all he said with a nod. This nod was the first sign that Aduke’s mother acknowledged him as a human being worthy of being talked to. Gabbo breathed a sigh of relief. He couldn’t believe that he had wanted her approval so badly.
As Bassey magically appeared to open the front doors, Gabbo turned back with his arm firmly around Aduke’s shoulder and steered her into the living area. He didn’t want her getting any funny ideas. He was still going to teach this chit a lesson or two.
‘So, you and Peter already had me figured out and set me up right?’ This was not a question, it was a statement. Gabbo had flipped again. Gone was the sensitive kind man who had spoken to her mum and back, was the evil industrialist.
‘No. Our meeting that first day was coincidental’ responded Addy
‘Which first day exactly?’ he asked with a soft voice. Soft enough to send ripples of fear down her spine.
‘At the white house’ she said. Suddenly scared that he wasn’t blowing up in her face
‘Anyway, don’t worry dear child, relax your head. No need to cook up additional lies. You will hear from Peter soon.’ he said ominously as he slowly walked away
Aduke’s mind began to race and she decided to warn Peter but as she brought out her phone, she realised Gabbo’s signal jammers were still working, so, no dice. ‘Damn you Gabbo!’ she was very scared for Peter.

The Rich Kids Of Lagos Part 42
Anita entered the flat she and Wale were supposed to be sharing with her own set of keys. She had the morning free because Simisola needed to meet with her father at the office. Simi had said something about fighting for her rights but Anita hadn’t listened too closely. These Rich Kids always had something they were unhappy about. Anita wished she could trade places with them and she had all the access to their money. She knew she would not complain for one second.
She walked into the flat and found that it was empty. She wondered where Wale had gone because he was not a morning person, she had therefore expected him to be home. The apartment, as usual, was in disarray and so, she decided to act the part of wife and help him rearrange the apartment.
She washed the dirty glasses in the kitchen and threw away the bottles of Orijin, Wale’s new drink of choice. As she went around the flat picking things up after him, she imagined that this was how they would be as a married couple. He would go out for work whilst she would take care of the home front. It seemed like a fabulous plan. As she sang and went around the apartment, her cleaning train moved into the bedroom.
As she picked up the heap of used clothes Wale had dumped on the bedroom floor, a red bra dangled to the floor. All else was forgotten as Anita looked at the red bra, shocked at the evidence that another woman had been here. Had Wale cheated on her? She picked up the bra and wondered if it belonged to a child. She was certain no adult would have breasts that were this small. How could Wale find this small-breasted creature attractive enough to even want to Fork her?
She decided to go round the house because she knew that there was no way Miss-Small-Titties would leave the house without wearing a bra. Her instincts had been spot on! In a corner, inside the wardrobe, she found a nylon bag of underwear. In it, there were three panties and another sky blue bra, all indicative of this tiny monster’s frequency here. She even had underwear in her house! Her own house! She was surprised because she saw no clothes. She was livid and decided to drag this out with Wale who walked into the room at that moment.
‘What the Fork are you doing in my bedroom?’ he asked, obviously high. Today, he was in a very bad mood and didn’t want to see anybody.

‘What?’ asked a confused Anita, she was the one with the right to be mad. What was he on about?
‘Why the hell didn’t you call before coming? he asked with anger
‘Are you mad? Are you a bastard? Have you forgotten I got a key when we paid the agent? Have you forgotten that you collected some money from me to rent this place? asked Anita who’s anger had reached its peak ‘I can see you have been cheating on me, Wale. How dare you?’ she continued
Immediately he heard this, his anger simmered but only for a bit. ‘I haven’t cheated on you mehn’ he said suddenly unsure of himself
‘You have you bastard! Is this my bra sizeor are these my panties?’ she asked as she confronted him with the evidence, expecting him to be contrite
‘Who the Fork are you to go through my belongings? So what if I Forked a Bytch? She’s nothing to me’ he responded vehemently
‘You are mad. I will show you in this Gidi! You think you are crazy right? I will show you my other side. Wale, I get craze ooo!’ threatened Anita
‘I said she means nothing. You stupid lesbo! Do you expect me to keep wanking till eternity? You are never here mehn! A man has needs. It is biological, not physical!’ yelled Wale

‘Me? Lesbo? Whose idea was this? I have sacrificed my time, money and life just for your foolish plans and you dare to call me a lesbian? I will kill you today’ said Anita who dashed into the kitchen for a knife
Wale was prepared for her when he came back and easily over powered her by side stepping the knife and squeezing her throat for he had learnt a thing or two about self-defence in prison. As she gasped for air, she looked at him with pleading eyes, silently hoping he wasn’t going to end her life.
‘Beg me! Say Wale please!’ he crazed eyes looked into hers
‘Please, Wale, please’ she managed to say
He immediately covered his mouth with hers as he released her neck and pushed her to the bed.
Within minutes of the fight, they were having rough, hot S£x with one another.
As they orgasmed, Wale slept off. Anita knew she had to have a plan. This bastard was not going to make her lose on both sides. She had to stop being a pawn in his grand schemes. She had to strategise and the time was now.

The Rich Kids Of Lagos Part 43
After driving through the traffic in Apapa, Peter finally found the warehouse. The traffic had been terrible.

Davis had told him The Boss wanted him to count some line pipes and joints they had just acquired from one of the other Oil Companies. The minute he parked his car, a security man in blue approached him. ‘Na you be Oga Peter?’
He nodded in the affirmative. ‘They don dey wait inside warehouse’. Peter thanked him and walked inside the building. He wondered why it was so dark in there and quickly brought out his phone to use as a torch light
‘Hallo! Anybody here? He yelled. Immediately he spoke, a lone light came on in the far end of the warehouse and he walked towards the light. Out of nowhere, he felt a kick in his back as another one kicked his phone out of his hands. The next thing was blow, upon blow rained on his face, from head to toe. He felt himself being dragged towards the light and knew that by now, his face must be swollen.
He felt himself being tied to a chair and heard an amplified voice on a speaker. He struggled to hear the voice above the ringing in his head. These guys had really Forked him up. He could not open one eye. He could not believe all of this had happened to him in less than three minutes.
Back in Gabbo’s house, around this same time, Bassey had turned on the television for Aduke to watch. Oga had asked him to do this. She found it strange but kept quiet. The images were initially blurry, but it later cleared. She could see a man tied up on a chair, seated under a lightbulb, everywhere else was dark.
‘Peter’ said the voice ‘This is Gabbo. Do you have something you would like to tell me?’ asked the voice
‘Boss, what have I done to deserve this? His question was answered by a punch from the left side.
Aduke recognised the voice! This was her Peter!!! All battered. Who had done this to him? How could Gabbo do this? She looked around, frantic, she had to tell him to stop! Her eyes went back to the screen, she could not believe this!
‘Good. There are some rules here, boy. You ask me no questions and answer only when directly spoken to. So, we start again’ issued Gabbo
‘Now, let us try again. Do you have something to tell me, Peter? Asked Gabbo
’No sir. Please sir’ responded Peter as another heavy punch came from the right side
‘That was just to jog your memory. Do you know any Aduke Shapade? Asked Gabbo. His voice was cold and without empathy.
‘Yes sir’ said Peter. As he responded, cold water was poured on his head. He sputtered and was amazed at all the little points where the water stung. He suspected he has sustained cuts and bruises.
‘Tell me about her’ ordered Gabbo
‘It wasn’t me sir, it was Eno sir. The former receptionist ‘ another blow landed on his stomach
‘No. Wait. Let me hear him out.’ ordered Gabbo to his thugs ‘What has Eno got to do with this?’ asked Gabbo
‘She was the one that stole the money sir’ he groaned out, the pain in his voice.
‘I’m lost, Peter. What money? asked Gabbo calmly.
Aduke watched in tears, shocked. Gabbo sounded so cold and heartless! Where was he? She decided to walk round the house until she found him.
‘The one I was to deliver to the lady at the white house. I could not because….’
‘So, in spite of setting me up, you also conspired with Eno to steal my money? Boys!!!’ Gabbo’s boys understood the order and immediately, a rapid succession of blows were rained on Peter.
Peter was not certain he would survive this.
‘Sir, please please. I will tell you what happened’ begged Peter

‘No need. You set me up and I have only just begun with you’ said Gabbo. Further angered that this same boy had set him up and failed to deliver a simple errand. His trusted Peter was a thief. How could he have misread a human being so badly?
‘Sir! Please! I can’t take this.’ Two more punches landed on either side of his head. The fists were thick and fast at the same time. Peter had never gone through such torture in his life.
‘Wait, let him talk’ ordered Gabbo.
‘That day, I went to deliver the money in the white house, but I couldn’t because …’
‘Because what, young man?! You were one of my best. I had great plans for you, yet you set me up! Interjected Gabbo, angrily. ‘Peter you set me up! You should know that men greater than you have failed. You are a rat compared to my enemies and I have taken them out.’
Gabbo startled as his office door was flung open. It was Aduke at the door with tears rolling down her eyes. She had obviously been watching. Gabbo looked at her dispassionately, unmoved by her tears.
She sunk to her knees ‘Alhaji, please Peter is innocent, release him.’
‘Ah, Juliet is here to beg for Romeo, how romantic.’ Taunted Gabbo
‘He knows nothing about us or he didn’t plan this, he is innocent’ begged Aduke
‘Really? So, who is guilty?’ asked Gabbo
‘I am’ Aduke said
“Thanks for the entertainment; I am in the middle of business here’ said Gabbo as he turned back to face the monitor. He spoke into the land phone again.
‘Peter. Tell me the whole story’ ordered Gabbo
‘I could not deliver the money because the lady in the white house that day was my long-time girlfriend, Aduke Shapade’ said Peter simply. He was tired.
‘What!!!?’ Gabbo got up, suddenly realising that he had erred. He had punished the wrong person. Aduke should be the one in trouble right now.
‘Release him, release him, and take him to Saint Nicholas Hospital’ he yelled into the phone
He turned to Aduke, who was a crumpled mess on the floor. ‘Young lady, even your noble mother cannot save you. I will make you will pay for this!’ He ran out of his home office, calling for his driver and patrol vehicle. He needed to visit Peter at the hospital and beg for forgiveness.
As they untied Peter from the chair, he fell to the ground like a sack of potatoes, weak in the body, but resolute in his mind. He knew he would never let this go. Gabbo had done the wrong thing. Too many Rich men in LasGidi had shown him. He would get his pound of flesh back.
Gabbo was going to pay. Oh! Aduke was going to pay too. She had ratted on him with his boss and Gabbo had not investigated. They are both guilty in equal measures.
He needed his phone, he needed Tessy right now. These were his last thoughts before he slipped into the warm embrace of unconsciousness.

The Rich Kids Of Lagos Part 44
Aduke quickly got up from the floor. She was not about to sit back and allow Gabbo lock her in this house. She decided to chase after him and met him standing outside the front door, impatiently waiting for the driver to pull up in front of him. One cursory look at his face confirmed her concerns that this evil man still had something planned for her.
Her brain swung into quick action and she figured out that it was safer for her to be seen with him in public than for her to be locked here with only his paid goons for company. The second the driver pulled up, she ran round and sat behind the driver, expecting a fight from Gabbo who sat in front, beside the driver.
Instead of a fight as she expected, Gabbo did not acknowledge her existence. She might as well have turned into thin air for all the attention he paid her. Aduke did not know if this was a good or bad thing, but as she sat behind the driver, her heart thudded faster.
She wondered if she had she finally walked into her own doom. Was she right to have followed him? Would she have been safer back in his home. At least she had witnesses there. Her mother and Aunty had seen her with Gabbo. Now that she had followed him, he could easily drive her away to an unknown location, beat or shoot her and then bury her. She was certain she had walked into a trap. Aduke began to fear for she suspected that she could be in big trouble.
‘Kofi, head towards Saint Nicholas Hospital right now. Please be as fast as you can’ he ordered.
She looked at his rock hard profile from her corner at the back and saw him bring out his mobile phone. His movements were quick as he scrolled through the contacts on his phone.
Danladi Gabbo had no time for the little twat seated in the back seat. He could see that she was worried. A part of him was jealous but he had no time for that right now. He had no time for anything other than Peter’s well-being. This was his personal mission. That boy had to be well. He had to ensure Peter received the best care possible. This had been a big mistake.
‘Dr. Nelson. How are you? Are you at work? Gabbo spoke into his phone

‘No? Murtala Muhammed Airport? Medical Conference in Spain?’ Dr. Nelson was unavailable. He was leading a delegation of Medical Doctors to a conference in Spain.
‘Can’t you postpone it?’ he paused for a response again. His voice echoed his disappointment ‘Ah, you are a keynote speaker. Can you come back to the hospital? My private jet can take you down later tonight or tomorrow morning and you would be reimbursed for all your troubles’ he tried to tempt the good doctor.
‘A run-down of my health challenge? No, it’s not me. It is one of my staff. He has been involved in a terrible accident’ He gave a quick run-down of Peter’s condition.
‘Not really. You see it wasn’t a road accident. He got into trouble with some thugs who beat him up’

‘I understand. I know. Would appreciate it if..… Oh you cannot come? It’s not a major case? The others will handle it?
‘Okay will you leave instructions and call me back? Great
Aduke looked at him from the back and reconfirmed that this man was indeed mad. How could he switch from being a thug to becoming a caring boss? Oh, he was now willing to fly a doctor out in his private jet, now that he knew he had erred? What a monster! He now wants to make amends after beating Peter up!
His voice jarred into her thoughts again.
‘Kofi, isn’t there an alternative route?’ he asked his driver, impatiently. They had driven into standstill traffic which seemed unlikely to move. Gabbo had already begun to fidget. He picked up the newspaper from the back seat beside Aduke. His hand brushed hers and he felt that jolt of electricity again. He quickly snatched his hand away.
‘No sir, this is our best route to the hospital sir.’ said Kofi who sounded as though he was used to living in traffic.

The Rich Kids Of Lagos Part 45
In another area of Apapa, two men were trying to take a quick decision. What should they do with this lifeless form that lay on the floor between them? Although he was still breathing and they had been asked to get him to the hospital, they scared of the deep groans emanating from him. Would he die? Or would they be apprehended by the police en route the hospital. These groans were too loud. Should they tie his mouth?
‘Shuga, wetin make we do now?’ asked Kashman who had carefully placed their occupant in the back seat.
‘This guy just lazy anyhow. How many ‘stars’ person give am sef?’ grumbled Shuga. He wondered why he had received the commission for this type of useless job in the first place. All he needed to know was that his balance was going to be fully paid.
‘Nor mind the bobo. Maybe na ajebutter pikin. But if we go that Saint Nicholas side, e fit be wahala o. You know say alugo dey plenty for that side. said Kashman, referring to the police
‘Me sef dey think the same thing o, Kashman. I nor want police wahala. So how e go be? The way this boy dey do sef, make he nor go die for we hand o’ Said a worried Shuga when he heard their companion’s groan.
‘I never see lazy boy like this one. On top how many blows sef?’ asked Kashman as he also commented on the groans coming from the back seat.
‘Wait, wait, Shuga, reverse. Just reverse. I see one hospital there. E dey do me one kind as this boy just dey make noise. Make he nor go die for this car o. Let us take him there’ advised Kashman
‘Aha, Saint Nancy Hospital. Correct. This na the best bet. It sounds like Saint Nicholas too na’ said Shuga, who was pleased at their ingenious idea
They parked the car in front of the clinic and quickly carried their passenger into the hospital. The front desk was manned by a receptionist who seemed willing to be anywhere else but at Saint Nancy Clinic. She chewed gum loudly and was more interested in chasing the flies that perched on her City People Magazine than on the patient who had just been rushed in.
‘Good afternoon Madam’ greeted Shuga
‘Thank you’ she responded with a loud snap of her gum
‘Wetin do am? Na okada?’ she asked, wondering if this was a casualty of the motorbike accidents that had once been so frequent in the LasGidi Metropolis.
The two men eyed each other and silently agreed to lie to the receptionist
‘Yes, Madam. Na Okada’ responded Kashman
‘Ehyah. Anyway he get registration card for here?’ she asked
‘I no think so ma. This is an emergency’ responded Kashman again
‘Okay’ she said ‘Una go pay for card and consultation money first’ she said as she snapped her chewing gum again. It seemed she had decided that this was a nice way to punctuate her sentences.
‘Na you be the doctor? Asked Shuga, irritated that they were to pay consultation fees before seeing the doctor.
‘I resemble doctor abi you see uniform for my neck?’ Responded the receptionist.
She eyed the two men, trying to gauge how desperately they wanted to help their friend. She could make some quick money out of this.
‘Card na N3,500 and consultation is N12,500’ she charged. She had quickly upped the charges so that she could make some money for herself. After all, they had come here with a car, unlike most of their other patients.
‘Okay, na N15,000 in all ba?’ asked Shuga ‘This na N7,000, we dey go find ATM machine make we collect the rest give you.’ He said
‘Okay, make una nor tey o!’ said the receptionist who smiled for the first time. She was going home happy today ‘What is his name?’ she asked, so that she could begin to fill out the registration forms.
‘Peter. I can’t remember his surname’ responded Kashman
‘No problems. Let me call the doctor. We will take care of your friend very well’ she said as she looked at Peter who lay on one of the benches in the seating area.
‘Hello Sir.’ said Tina into the phone
‘Yes, Tina. What is it?’ her voice always irritated Dr. Gbenle, popularly known as Dr Gbesita in the area. He was known for his expertise at abortions and rumour had it that he had once terminated an eight month old pregnancy and the mother had been able to resume her rice hawking business the next day.
‘We have a customer’ she informed him
‘Na D&C?’ he asked directly. Tina was a trusted ally, although he disliked her, she had proven useful many times.

‘No. Na accident’ she responded brusquely
‘Why you go admit accident victim, you this woman?’ he yelled. ‘Tell them make them carry am go another hospital!’ Dr. Gbenle was angry
Stupid Tina had gone beyond her brief! She knew their area of expertise, didn’t she? Why had she gone ahead to accept someone who had been in an accident? Did she want to implicate him? Admittedly not many people knew that he really wasn’t a doctor. He had dropped out for failing in Microbiology in his Second Year at the University and had not updated himself by reading anything that had to do with taking care of accident victims
‘Dr. Gbenle, you complain too much! Just yesterday, you complained about low business. Today, we have a patient and you are still complaining. I wish I knew what you wanted o’ responded Tina heatedly.
‘Ok. Wait, Go and look at him. Does he have any broken bones? He asked, quickly calming down. He had bills to pay, he would manage this patient somehow.
‘No, no broken bones. He is lucky. They say he fell from the Okada. It is as if he did not wear helmet because his head and face is swollen’ she responded
‘Swollen face? No breakage? Okay I’m coming’ said Gbenle, sure it would be an easy case to resolve.
**********
Simisola stood in front of her father, very angry, for he had kept her waiting at the reception for over an hour. She knew this technique and therefore decided to play it low. A wrong move from her now would mess her case up.
‘Hello Daddy’ she said as walked to his side of the desk to give him perfunctory pecks on his cheeks. They barely touched one another, but it would have to do. There was no need to keep up appearances here. They did not have an audience.
‘I need to join the company, Dad’ said Simi. She went directly to the reason why she had gone to his office.
‘You know my position on that, Simisola’. Responded her father in a soft voice. He did not want Simisola to take over any major positions. He knew her too well. Give her an inch, she would take a mile, she was too ambitious and could even block her brothers from coming into the organisation when they were finally ready to take over. Moreso, running a business is a man’s job.
‘Daddy, its not fair! I have a strong MBA degree and a First Class Degree in Economics!’ cried out Simisola passionately ‘I would love to work here!’ she begged
‘Simisola! Not now. I’m not in the mood for any of your silliness’ he cautioned
‘Ok then, Father. Give me a contact or allow me work for one of the competitors’ she said, knowing what the answer would be. Chief’s pride was too much to allow him do that.
‘Over my dead body!’ he exploded
‘How about the banks then?’ she taunted, knowing his ready answer
‘No! I told you to stay abroad but you refused’ he said
‘But, you let her work here’ rolling her eyes as she referred to her step mother. ‘Why not me?’ this still hurt. It was almost as if no matter what she did, she was never good enough for her dad.
‘I told you, she’s just the face of the company. Every company needs that soft side. People find her pretty. It works to our advantage’. He explained. Even with her being in the External affairs Department, he knew how much effort he had to put in to clip his young wife’s wings. He was not willing to do that with Simi too.
‘So, your children are never to work, Daddy? Asked Simi, hurt by her father’s implicit admission that she was neither pretty enough nor fit to work in his organisation.
‘Goriola will work here and run the business’ responded the Chief, simply.
‘Gori? Daddy Gori? He is unwell! He has been in and out of rehab and psychology sessions! How is he expected to run this company?’ asked Simi, affronted that her Daddy would choose sick Gori over her.
‘Gori is a man. Running a business is a man’s job. Look, Simi, I don’t have time for this. I know we often go through this when you are in need of one toy or the other. What is it now? I’m in no mood to be reminded of Gori’s condition!
‘Perhaps you need to be reminded of it. Gori is more than just a receipt you make transfers to! He is your son! He is currently battling depression and addiction together. He is a good boy turned wonky because of you and mummy and now, that Bytch’ pointing towards her step mother’s office
‘If you want to stay in this office for one moment longer, child, you would have to refrain from calling your step mum a Bytch’ said the chief. He was ticked today as always by the dynamics between these two girls.
‘Daddy, we all know that this is not you. Why won’t you let any of us work here? Why are you using Gori as a front? Why are you willing to give us all the money in the world, but stop us from working? She asked passionately
‘Simisola, it is not how it looks. See, I have my reasons. Okay, look at it this way. It is a big disadvantage to you that you should hold some positions while unmarried. This could make you a prey for dubious men who would try to marry you for the wrong reasons’ he said. This had always been a good response.
‘Daddy, do you think I never learnt anything from you. You showed us since we were young how to identify fake friends. I’m an expert at that.’ Said Simi, tongue-in-cheek.
‘Hmmn so you think all the friends you have right now are genuine friends eh?’ asked her father
Simi swallowed ‘Daddy, you are purposely changing the topic! I want a key role here ‘ she said standing up, ready for battle.
‘Simi, not now!’ yelled her Father.
‘Daddy, if she can be here, then, I can be too! Are you sure she’s not using juju on you and the rest of us?’ asked Simi softly. She intended to plant the seed of doubt in her dad’s mind.
He threw his head back and laughed. A roaring laughter ‘Simisola, you are a child! Nobody can use juju on me!’ he said assertively
‘Dadddddyy’ she was a few seconds from stomping her feet like a child
‘Okay, Simi. Clean your act up, get your fiancé here, let me evaluate him and then, we would take it from there’ said her Dad to pacify her.
‘Daddy are you serious?!!!! Thank you!’ said Simi happily. This could be arranged.
Chief Owen-Browne smiled. If his intels were right, he had nothing to bother about so,he pasted a smile on his face.
‘Is there anything else my little girl wants? He asked benevolently
‘Daddy, can I get a little something for myself?’ said Simi, suddenly acting the role of ‘little girl’.
‘Ok, ok he said as he wrote out a hefty figure on the cheque leaf. When he presented it to her, she whooped. Her father could be so generous. It was on days like this that she loved him most.
‘Thank you Daddy. I’d be on my way now’ said Simi as she left his office.
Chief Owen-Browne sat back and looked at her departing figure. He wondered where he had gone wrong. In spite of all the money he had spent on them, his three children were huge disappointments.
Perhaps he needs to make amends with Toye, his youngest child. Toye showed a lot of promise but had an unforgiving spirit like his mother.
He hoped that when Toye grew older, he would know that it is not such a big deal that he slept with his girlfriend. It was not as though he had proposed to marry the girl or anything. It had just been a passing fling. Toye had caught them and had not spoken to him since then. If only the young fool knew that he, Chief Owen Browne, had helped him by saving him from marrying a terrible girl, perhaps he would have shown some gratitude.
Instead, Toye had cut off from the family and would not even take a dime from him. The idiot did not know that he had arranged with his work place to hire him and pay him a fat salary. The young boy reminded him of himself so much.
Anyway, today was no day for thinking about his problematic family. There is too much money waiting to be made.

The Rich Kids Of Lagos Part 46
Peter swirled in and out of the vortex. The powerful mass of air kept drawing him into its powerful current. It was much more comforting to remain in it because the rush of air took the edges of the pain way. The pain surges when he tried to come out were too much. He got drawn in again.
He saw his young self, who had just lost his mother. He wondered why the pain felt so raw. He had shed hot tears that day she passed. She had not told him she was going to leave him and he had needed her so many times after she had passed. He had wanted to share so many secrets with her and ask her so many questions. He could see her now. Standing afar off telling him to hold on, that it wasn’t his time yet. She had always teased him about being so impatient – especially for good things. He could not hear her voice but surprisingly, he could feel her words in his heart. ‘Peter, wait there is still so much for you to do’.
He zoned out again, feeling the pain in his head and chest. He could not take it so he moved into the centre of the vortex again. This time, he saw Aduke, his love. He saw her as he had seen her that first day, innocent and pure. Her Ghana weaving had been neat. She had worn a fitted top on jeans skirt. He had never looked at jeans skirts the same way since that day. Peter could see Aduke teasing him about his little girlfriend as they walked back home from one of their charity jaunts. They had loved going to Modupe Cole Memorial together. He was surprised to feel so bad about forgetting that part of their togetherness. He could see himself and Aduke with Olu, his friend, who used to tease them about finishing off each other’s sentences. He remembered that Olu had died in a ghastly accident and knew how bad Aduke had taken it. He wondered why Olu looked so fresh and untouched. He could remember how Olu had looked when he had been called to identify the body. This Olu was not mangled up at all. He looked so fresh. Olu was smiling at him and trying to tell him something, but he could not hear him for the pain had penetrated again.
Someone was moving his sore head without concern for him. The pain was incredulous. Why was he being treated so badly? He tried to run away from it by going into the vortex again, this time, he saw his boss, Gabbo. Gabbo’s job was the first one he had gotten in LasGidi without the involvement of his Aunt and Uncle. They had always treated him like a charity case and each time he lost one of the precious jobs they got him, it became a family matter. In spite of his brains, he had been unlucky with keeping jobs. Something bad had always happened. He had secretly applied for Gabbo’s job because he didn’t want them involved.
Gabbo had been his best boss, he had always pushed him beyond the expected and praised him where he excelled. Gabbo had always seen him as a high potential staff who would grow in the organisation. Gabbo had inspired him to want to do more and was a great mentor. He was surprised that Gabbo’s back was turned to him right now. He could see Gabbo and Aduke afar off, holding hands. What was his girlfriend doing with his boss? How had they become so friendly? Why weren’t they calling him like the others. Why were their backs turned to him? This pain in his heart was too much. He tried to cry out ‘Boss, that’s my girl! Addy, that’s my boss!’ but no sound came out. His chest hurt. The pain had come into the vortex. He needed to go in deeper, further away from this pain.
The centre was calling him, the rush of air felt very calming. Peter wondered if he should go in. He somehow knew that this could be the point of no return. He could see his mother on one side asking him to turn back and embrace the pain. He wondered why she would wish so much pain on him. The vortex was blissful. Perhaps he should rest. He really needed to rest….

The Rich Kids Of Lagos Part 47
As soon as the car drove into the hospital, Gabbo got down and walked briskly into the building. Aduke also ran out, but could only trail behind him, for his pace was faster than hers.
‘Good morning Alhaji’ said the lady at the reception
‘Hello, Nurse Rose. How is your little boy now? Asked Gabbo. Aduke was surprised. Was he a regular here?
‘Alhaji, he is fine. As fit as a fiddle now. You would never know he is the same child that had a hole in his heart. Thank God for good people like you. The world needs more great men like you. Your huge donations saved my only child’s life’ said the Nurse, thankful.
Aduke was confused. This man was a mass of contradictions. A thug and a gentleman, wild, yet so gentle. Harsh, yet so caring. She was no longer sure of whom he was. Aduke began to suspect that this mercurial character had mental problems.
‘Haba! Rose, for nothing. You keep embarrassing me anytime we meet. I’m here for other reasons my dear’ he said, smiling slightly.
‘Ehyah, you have missed Dr. Nelson oh, he has travelled to….’ Began Rose
‘I spoke with Nelson and I am aware of his whereabouts’ said Gabbo, cutting her short
‘So, who would you see today? Or do you want to manage till he comes back? Have you been using your medication?’ asked Rose, worried about him
‘Thank you Mama Rose’ he teased ‘I’m not here for myself, plus, we’ve got company’ he said, looking pointedly at Aduke. This was not a time to delve into his medical issues.
‘Ah, I see’ said Rose who promptly clammed up.
Aduke was shocked to feel a spear of concern dart through her chest. Was he okay? Did he have any life threatening conditions? How come she hadn’t seen it in him? What could the condition be? Awwh! her poor D.G! She had always seen him as a strong stud. She quickly scanned him, looking into his beautiful face, hoping something would show her the signs she desperately needed to see. He had to be okay!
‘….Owhoko’ Addy was jolted back to earth when she heard Peter’s name mentioned. She was very angry with herself. This was about Peter, not about D.G! She wondered if she was crazy. How could she be feeling sorry for this man? She hoped her Peter was better!
‘When did they bring him in sir? Asked the nurse
‘Just this afternoon’ responded Gabbo
Rose quickly ran through the records ‘He’s not here sir’ she said simply
‘Are you sure? They were closer to the clinic than we were. I’m surprised they aren’t here yet’ said Gabo, worried.
‘Let me check the emergency register’ she said as she pursed her lips again, her eyes quickly scanning the register ‘ Owhoko, owhoko, …… No sir, nothing here either; she said
‘Could they have used another name?’ he asked, desperate
‘Well, I also checked for Peter. Perhaps you might want to ring those who were supposed to have brought him here, while I make additional enquiries from my colleagues. I would be very surprised that he is here, unrecorded, though.’ Said the Nurse as she went away to check, Gabbo began to check his phone frantically for the number to ring.
‘The number you called is not responding’ replied the annoying voice of the telecoms lady, informing Gabbo that the phones were either switched off or out of network coverage area. D.G tried over and over again, but the number seemed to have been switched off.
‘What is going on here?’ He grumbled under his breath
‘What is it?’ asked Aduke, worried. This was the first comment she had directed at him since they had left his apartment
‘As you can see, Peter’s name isn’t in the register. I’m trying to locate the guys who were to have brought him in’ he responded slowly, as though talking to a really dim witted person.
‘I know all that’ she responded impatiently. ‘Did he think she was deaf? ‘Where is Peter?’
‘He’s somewhere here, I’m certain there has been a mix up’ he said confidently, just as Nurse Rose came in, with some bad news.
‘Sorry sir, he’s not here’ said the Nurse
‘Are you certain, Rose? he asked, really worried
‘Yes sir’ she said
He looked at the screen of his phone again, this time really worried
‘Davis, we cannot find Peter. Can you try to locate those boys? They are supposed to have brought Peter to Saint Nicholas’ said Gabbo into the phone. ‘Please let me know quickly’
He began to pace back and forth. This the first time Aduke would see Gabbo in this state. He looked really uneasy. It must be worse than she thought.
She sat in the nearest chair and began to cry softly. Peter might be dead because of her!
‘Hey, don’t cry… he said softly. ‘We will find him’ he said as he knelt by her side
‘But we don’t know where he is… what if they killed him? what if he is dead? She asked, vocalising her greatest fears.
‘No, Addy. He’s fine. The human body has a high threshold for pain’ said Gabbo simply
‘You should know you Bully!’ said Aduke, suddenly angry
‘Can we save the drama for later? he said as his phone rang ‘Yes, Davis. No luck. Hmm. Called Olu. His team would get us to the bottom of this. Give me per second updates okay? I need to know where they took him to.
‘Let us go. He isn’t here.’ Said Gabbo,
‘Just like that? Shouldn’t we wait? Asked Aduke in the hope that the guys had missed their way
‘No. They should have been here by now. They know their way here’ Said Gabbo.
‘Let’s go, there isn’t anything more to do here’ she could see he was worried
‘Will they find him, will he be okay? She asked, her eyes awash with a fresh bout of tears
‘Yes, he would be fine’ said Gabbo. He was not very sure of this, but he knew she desperately needed his reassurance.
He stepped forward, pulled her out of the chair and held her tightly in his arms, she felt so good there. This was where she belonged.
Aduke stood in his embrace, melting in against his hard chest. This felt so good. She wondered briefly why they had been fighting so much.

‘Hey, Tessy’ said Simisola as her friend walked in
Simi was writing some details down in her journal. She looked serious with her glasses perched on her nose
‘Professor Simisola! I haven’t seen you like this in a long time’ teased Tessy

‘Tessy, allow me oh! I need to get my life back in order’ she said as she laughed out
‘Sounds good. So, what project are you working on this time?’ Tessy knew her friend very well, she had a way of jumping from one scheme to the other. Early last year, she had arranged a beauty pageant show for unsuspecting innocent girls. Tessy had been very surprised to see how much Simi had made from the whole exercise.
The sponsors had come begging Simi for an opportunity to sponsor the event. Apparently, the Owen-Browne name had helped her curry favours in the business world. The event had been well organised and it had also been well attended as everyone angled to get a ticket to the event. Tessy knew she had to get in on whatever action Simi was up to.
Tessy knew that Simi had scammed everyone, even the winner of the grand prize had not been given her full cash rewards. The young lady had however been smart enough not to complain, so, Simi had taken the girl under her wing and had endorsed her for the ‘Simisola Special Treatment’. She treated the young girl like her pet puppy. To be fair though, she had helped the girl secure many endorsement and advert deals. The girl was now a celebrity, all thanks to Simisola.
‘Simisola!, what plans are you hatching out now?’ asked Tessy
‘This is Operation Get Married!’ said Simi
‘Who is getting married?’ asked Tessy, curious
‘Me.’ Responded Simi simply
‘You gotta be kidding me’ said Tessy
‘Nope. I’m serious’ responded Simi
‘Wow! Who is the lucky guy?’ asked Tess
‘None yet. We shall choose one together’ said Simi
‘Uh? What does Anita think about this?’ asked Tess
‘She has been out all morning, she doesn’t know yet’ said Simi who did not look sober
‘Wow. Didn’t think you were the marrying type’ said Tessy, she was shocked. There had to be a story here,
‘I’m not. Desperate times call for desperate actions, love’ said Simi, simply
‘So there is a story?’ asked Tessy, happy she had been right
‘Of course! I need to get married so I can join Daddy’s firm’ responded
‘Ah, so how will you tell Anita about this’ asked a curious Tessy, she needed to see how this drama would play out
Just chill. I am working out the details, we would all be in on it. I need to deal with that stupid tiny Bytch married to my dad’ said Simi vehemently
‘What has Sweet-Potato got to do with this?’ asked Tessy. Sweet-Potato was the nickname the girls had given the younger Mrs Owen-Browne because she always made the effort to call her husband endearing names in front of Simi, just to piss her off.
‘I was at dad’s office earlier and he told me that if I could bring a fiancé to him, he would allow me to work in the office. Once in, I would edge her out!’ responded Simi
‘What?’ exclaimed Tessy, ‘Your dad budged?! I cannot believe it. Wow!’ Tess knew of the long fight that Simi had with her dad over this issue. She was happy her friend could finally get into the office
‘So, why are you looking for husband when he asked for a fiancé?’ asked Tess, confused
‘Tess, don’t you know the crafty old geezer anymore? He’s going somewhere with this. I need to find a husband, I need a guy who will not bow and bend to him. I know he’s expecting that I will bring a hungry guy who would be willing to dump me the moment he credits the guy’s account. I need a credible guy who is willing to help me achieve my dreams. The thing is, none of our friends fit the bill. Do know anyone? Asked Simi
‘How about Chijioke’ offered Tessy
‘Eh, you want his girlfriend to kill me? Joked Simi
‘But its only temporary na’ laughed Tessy
‘No. Next.?’ Said Simi
Edmund nko?’ calling the name of another friend of theirs
‘Haba! Tessy, Do you want me to be the one to fund his habit?’ It was an open secret that Edmund Owoicho, the son of the Foreign Affairs Minister was a druggie. Rumour had it that his dad had cut him off and although Eddie had been able to get contracts using his family contacts, he had been unable to deliver on them because he had squandered the upfront payments on cocaine.
‘Tess, we don’t need anybody whose family has a name. Their parents could see this union as God sent, one that they can use to stabilise the future of their fortunes. So, divorce would be hard. I need somebody whose family would not kick back when I need a divorce, yet credible enough not to collect money from my dad. I want someone focused enough to take me at my word’s worth if I say I would set him up comfortably after all this’ said Simi.
‘Somebody is coming to mind, Simi. Admittedly, he is irritating, but, he could fit the bill. There are moral issues involved though…’ said Tessy slowly
‘Who is it Tess? Asked Simi, curious
‘Do you know Aduke’s boyfriend, Peter? Said Tessy
‘I know him and No. That guy and Aduke are like … in love or something’ said Simi, adamant.
‘Wait! Look, Aduke knows you and Peter are not a real item. I don’t know how we can hook him though. We have to sell him a good story. The thing is in terms of integrity, the guy is a sure pass’ said Tessy who knew because she had tempted him many times.
‘hmm… should I speak with Aduke first? Asked Simi, who had begun to toy with the idea.
‘We can do the talking-to simultaneously. Let me call him to request for a meeting’ said Tessy, as she began to call Peter’s number

The Rich Kids Of Lagos Part 48
Tina looked around the room. What was that vibrating sound? She stopped what she was doing and listened again. There it went again! She traced the sound to the nylon bag on the bedside table at the hospital.
‘Na for this nylon sef. Wetin dey inside?’ she asked before peeking inside
‘Oh na him cloth sef, and his phone’ she picked up the offending item and tried to look at the face of the phone to know who the caller was. It was impossible to see who it was because the face of the phone was badly cracked as a result of the kick Peter had received when he entered the warehouse. Shuga had been kind enough to pick up the phone when Kashman carried Peter to the car. He had slipped the phone into Peter’s pocket because he did not want any issues with The Boss.
Tina looked at the phone and contemplated if she should keep it as hers. She changed her mind when the phone rang again. Whoever was calling him was persistent.
‘E fit be his family. Those men have not returned with the money. Maybe oga caller go fit pay sef’ she thought as she chewed her gum loudly. She decided to pick the call
‘Hello, who are you?’ said Tina into the phone
‘Why you go ask me who dey speak? Na me ask you first’ argued Tina.
‘Why the phone is with me? He is in the hospital, Saint Nancy’s hospital in Apapa. He had an Okada Accident’ responded Tina to the questions she had been asked
‘I say who you be?’ asked Tina ‘Tessy? Are you his sister? Will you come?’ she asked. She hoped this Tessy would bring the remaining money.
‘No, bag nor dey him hand o! The people that brought him in have not even paid yet’ responded Tina. She wondered why this person was interested in a bag.
‘We are in Apapa!’ she had already told her the location. Why was the caller asking again? She hissed and switched the phone off.

Self-consciously, DG and Addy disentangled, avoiding each other’s eyes. Neither was willing to admit that the hug had felt good or that they had missed the other’s touch.
‘So, he is not here, what do we do? Asked Aduke, stating the obvious.
‘I have asked Davis to get in touch with Olu, my Private Investigator who would solve this mystery’ he responded. ‘Don’t worry, Addy he would be fine.’ Said a slightly jealous Gabbo. He briefly wondered if she would have shown the same level of concern if he had been the one in Peter’s shoes.
‘I’m mad at you D.G’ said Aduke simply
‘As I am with you, Aduke. You have a lot of questions to answer. I do not understand you; the coincidences around you are just too many. It is incredibly hard to believe your stories. However, the time is not now’ he said ‘Let us go home’ he said
‘Please take me to my own apartment Alhaji. Please.’ Begged Addy. She needed to be away from him, even if it is for a few hours.
‘Okay, Koffi and I would drop you at yours, but please call me. We need to trash all our issues out, Addy. We should not leave things as they are’ he appealed.
She nodded.
*********
The vortex called but the pain was too much.
His mother waved goodbye and his friend kept smiling at him. Peter knew the time was not now. He loved the comfort of the vortex but realised that he would soon be pushed out of it. The pain was getting sharper.
Someone was opening up the plaster on his face without any care that it was attached to his skin.
‘Hmmmm’ he groaned.
‘Doctor, it is as if he is coming round oh’ said a soft voice
‘Okay that is fine. Let him come round. I just hope I don’t have to stitch this chin. I should have done it while he was unconscious. Finish opening it let me see.’ Said Dr. Gbenle
Peter groaned again and opened his eyes. He was confused. Where am I, who are these people. Am I safe?
Suddenly, his memories came rushing all at once. He remembered how his favourite boss had dealt with him all because of Aduke. What had she said to Gabbo and why had she done this to him?
Peter made up his mind at that point to stop working for Gabbo. Once was enough, he would not wait until Gabbo killed him.
‘Good day Peter’ said the doctor in a very loud voice
‘Can you hear me? Can you see me? He asked, even louder than before

Peter tried to nod, but he discovered that it was painful
‘Yes’ he croaked
Talking was even more painful to do than he had imagined. His throat was parched and he needed water.
‘Thirsty. I want water. I have a headache too’
‘Grace!’ said the Doctor as he called the ward maid in the dirty uniform, ‘Bring him some water and Panadol’
Grace scurried off to do the Doctor’s bidding
‘You were lucky. We had to do a lot to bring you back. Next time please wear a helmet. Said Dr. Gbenle.
Peter tried to look around the room. From the little he could see, there was nothing here that indicated that they had done anything other than wait for him to wake up.
The ward maid returned with a dirty looking glass cup and two sachets of pure water. Peter balked at first, but knew that he had no choice. The water was so good.
Another lady came into the hospital, chewing gum loudly
‘You have a visitor in the reception’, she announced
‘Does the person have an appointment?’ asked Dr. Gbenle, feeling self-important.
‘No, said Tina, ‘it is the patient’s visitor’ she said
‘Okay, maybe your friends are back here’ said the Doctor
Peter was surprised but was unwilling to waste his energy on talking.
‘Let them come’ said the Doctor to Tina. ‘Grace, please bring his food’.
****************
Tessy looked around the dingy hospital and wondered how Peter had found himself here. What had he been doing on an Okada?
She was here for two reasons. First, she had to protect her share of Aduke’s initial bounty and secondly, she was here to ensure that Peter agreed to her proposition over Simi’s plan. She had to play her cards right by showing him concern for his health. She could get something from Peter and Simi.
As she stepped into the hospital room, she wiped the look of disgust from her face and replaced it with one of concern.
Peter could not hide his shock. How had Tessy known he was here? Did she have a hand in any of this?
‘Peter! What happened? The nurse said you had been in an accident? Are you okay? We have to get you out of here. Why did you choose this hospital?’ she asked, worried.
Peter was amazed because he had never seen this side of Tessy. He was confused and alone. Nobody had even felt his absence, except this young lady.
Grace came back in with a tray of food. She put a plate of beans and bread before him. Peter wondered what kind of place this was. How could they offer him beans and bread shortly after he had regained his consciousness?
‘Is this his food? Asked Tessy aggressively
‘Yes.’ Said Grace simply
‘Did you not tell me over the phone that he fainted? Is this the food you give to someone who just regained consciousness?’ said Tessy echoing Peter’s thoughts
‘No be me you follow talk, Madam. I think it is Tina that spoke with you’ responded Grace defensively ‘and na Dr. Gbenle say make I bring food to him. This is the only thing I was able to buy around here. Don’t worry, Oga, the beans is sweet’ said Grace as she left the room.
‘Peter, how did you get here? What were you doing on an Okada?’ asked Tessy. She was truly perplexed. ‘We need to get you out of here’ she said
‘No. It was not an accident. Gabbo had me thoroughly beaten up!’ said Peter
‘Why would he do that? Asked Tessy. She found it hard to believe. Are you sure you have your facts right? How did you get here then?’ asked an incredulous Tess.
‘I don’t know how I got here, but I remember being beaten’ said Peter calmly
‘Wow!’ Tessy was in shock
‘Anyway, it’s all good. I’m going back to Warri. I need to get out of this Gidi madness. I have suffered enough in this town’ he said, feeling sorry for himself.
‘No. Peter. The one thing we have in common is that we are not quitters! You need to pick yourself up and get back on track. They have beaten your body up, but you must never allow anybody to beat your spirit. You will get better and come back bigger. One day, you will be better than Gabbo and then, if you like, you can make him and Aduke pay’ said Tessy passionately
Peter listened to her intently and saw a grain of truth in what she had said. He still wanted to go to his village to relax and he told her this. Moreso, he desperately wanted to avoid Gabbo until he had worked his plans out.
‘Peter, I have a proposition and I think it is a great idea especially now’ said Tessy as she went into the details of her plan.
Peter listened and wondered which way he should go. Should he go home or follow this hare-brained scheme through? There were possible benefits to this plan. It could help him.
‘One thing, Tessy. Do not tell Aduke you saw me. I suspect those guys brought me here out of the kindness of their heart. If Ahaji thinks I’m dead, I would act dead until I’m ready to make my reappearance.’ He said. ‘I will consider your plans, but I need to rest now. My head aches too much.
With that, he closed his eyes and fell into a deep sleep.

The Rich Kids Of Lagos Part 49
As they left the hospital building, Aduke and Danladi got into the back seat of their vehicle.
‘Aduke, describe your aunty’s house to Kofi’ said Gabbo
‘My Aunty’s house? We agreed at the hospital that you would take me to my own place.’ responded Aduke
‘Yeah, I know. However, on second thoughts, I think you need to speedily sort out this mess out with your mum. In fact, it is imperative that you do so. Plus, you are safer with your family than with your silly girlfriends’ Gone was the nice man who had held her in his arms in the hospital building. He had suddenly morphed into his imperious self and had taken on the I-know-what-is-good-for-you air.
‘No. I’m not going to aunty Tok’s house right now and my friends are not silly!’ said Addy, sounding like a teenager
‘You should. Your mother travelled down to Lagos because of you’ responded Gabbo slowly, as though he was talking to a child
‘And so what? She came into town and decided to embarrass me at every turn! It is she who needs to apologise to me, not the other way round!’ said Aduke petulantly.
Gabbo was taken aback. He knew Aduke was stubborn but this was on a new level.
‘Aduke! Are you kidding me?’ asked Gabbo, incredulously
‘No, I’m not. she responded simply. ‘Kofi, take me to Simi’s house’ she said, addressing the driver directly
‘Ok Ma’ responded Kofi as he slowed the car down
‘Alhaji?’ said Kofi who awaited his boss’ final permission
‘No. Head towards her aunty’s house in Phase 1? said Gabbo.
‘Okay Sir’ said Kofi as the car picked up speed again.
‘Gabbo, don’t try me! said Aduke in low, firm tones. She was trying her best not to disrespect him in the presence of his employee and found that she was failing badly.
‘You are the cause of everything that has happened, I am here trying to cooperate with you, but you cannot grant me the common courtesy of deciding where to stay! Do you think if I went to my mum’s house, I would be allowed to breathe, much less think? I am not ready to go there yet! she said
‘You need to apologise to her. She is upset with you. Period.’ said Gabbo. This time, he said it softly. He understood her perspective, but he also needed to encourage her to do the right thing.
‘No. She needs to apologise to me. A mother supports her child first before throwing her out to the wolves! She does not know where I am right now, or who with. Is it justifiable to say because you are angry you should do that to your only child? asked Aduke
‘Wait’ said Gabbo with a smile. His mood had suddenly shifted. ‘So, who exactly is the wolf here ?’ he asked
‘You, Gabbo!’ said Aduke seriously, irritated at the sudden change in his mood.
He pulled her to his side at the back of the car, his arms around her and whispered into her ear.
‘So, I’m a wolf, Aduke. How come you are not scared of me then?’ his lips were curled at the edges, a smile in his eyes
‘Because I am well versed in training wild animals’ she responded simply, without humour.
‘So you think I’m wild, Addy? he asked, still amused
‘I know you are wild, Gabbo.’ she said, still serious ‘Look at what you did to poor Peter. Would any sane person do that? Now we cannot find him’ she said passionately.
Gabbo’s eyes hardened, his mood changed again. Gone was the playful banter, replaced by a hard man. She had succeeded in annoying him again.
‘Look here, lady. Peter was wrong. Peter should have found a way to let me know you and he were an item. He knew all the while and kept quiet in spite of how close we were. He and I actually had a great relationship before you came along. Anyway, don’t worry I would ensure that I find your lover boy for you.’ he said through his clenched teeth, angrily.
‘Kofi’ he said to the driver ‘Get the directions from her and head to her apartment building or wherever she wants to go’ he ordered shutting her out. The frost was back on.
‘And you’ he said to her ‘How many times do I need to tell you to wear your seat belt? Please do so now’ he said, looking at her with very cold eyes
Aduke looked at him, used to his strange mood swings and reconfirmed that this man was indeed a wild animal. She doubted that anybody on earth could tame this beast but for now, she was glad that she had gotten her way and did not care if he was upset with her. She needed to be in her own space right now.
She brought out her phone and scrolled to her instagram account. She was sure to catch a lot of fun while looking at pictures on AsoEbiBella, but first she had to call Tessy. She would do this as soon as she got out of this car.
*********************
As Tessy sat quietly, she looked Peter’s sleeping profile and worried that he would not be well soon enough for she and Simi’s plan. The grazes and cuts on his face look really bad. She knew she had to get him out of here and into another hospital. She was determined to be with him until he woke up again.
Tessy smiled at the thought because it seemed that she had taken up the role of wife or girlfriend to Peter. She cast her mind back and reminded herself of how much she and Peter hated each other when Aduke was in the mix.
‘Life is funny’ thought Tessy to herself, ’Who would imagine that this same Peter would ever open up to me?’, remembering all the fights they had gotten into. ‘Who would have thought that this could ever be possible?’ she mused, amazed that it was she who sat by Peter on his sick bed.
One would ordinarily expect that she would have been the one to send him to the hospital with a broken jaw! He had been too overbearing! However, right now, she felt pity for him as he lay there, broken and alone. She decided that she would protect him while he was here and at the same time, get something for herself, so she began to strategise. She was in a good position because everybody’s secrets were falling into her laps.
Tessy was lost in deep thought when Peter awakened. It was his groan as he tried to turn sides that alerted her to his wakeful state. As she tried to help him, he held back because he could not recognise her. His eyes had the faraway look of a caged animal, who was yet to forget the torture that captivity had brought him. As she patted his back, his senses returned, he focused and relaxed a bit.
‘Are you okay Peter? Do you want anything to drink? asked Tessy
‘I’m fine. Thanks’ said Peter
‘Shall I get the doctor? asked Tessy
‘No. I am okay’ responded Peter
‘I was wondering, should we move you to one of the better hospitals? she asked
‘No, Tessy. I’m good here. I just want to stay low key till I go to my village’ he said, reminding her of his intention
‘You are still insistent on going?’ asked Tess

‘Yeah, I need to get myself together and I think I can do that back home’ replied Peter
‘You should go ‘away’ if that’s what you really want, not your village’ advised Tessy
‘Away? I’m already doing that’ said Peter
‘No. I mean away to London, America, Dubai or Paris’ said Posh Tessy
‘I am going away, Tessy. To. My. Village. Tessy. Use your head, I am out of a job. Should I waste my savings on a vacation? Would you bear the expenses of this recommended vacation for me? Please, I cannot afford to be frivolous right now’ he said, irritated at her suggestion
Tessy looked at him, irritated because she could catch a glimpse of his annoying side making a re-appearance
‘So, what do we d…..’ she was suddenly interrupted by the strains of Bruno Mars’ recorded voice. It was her ringtone, someone was calling her.
‘Hello, Addy. What’s up? said Tessy as Peter perked up. He was interested in this conversation. ”Wait wait wait, calm down, you are going too fast! said Tessy into her phone
‘Start again Addy, what happened?’ asked Tessy
‘Peter? Hospital? You cannot find him?’ said Tessy as she looked at Peter who was shaking his head vigorously. Tessy wondered what was a going on but continued her conversation with Aduke.
‘Saint Nicholas? Looking for him?’ she said as she tried to piece Aduke’s news together. Theresa looked at Peter who was silently mouthing ‘No, No, No’ to her.
‘So, Alhaji’s P.I Team are looking for him? Hmmm. You know what, keep this to yourself and let us meet at home’ said Tessy
Peter quietly watched as Tessy dramatically cut the call and made a chore of replacing it in her handbag. She waited for him to jump at her with questions, but he just lapsed into silence, waiting for her. When she couldn’t take it anymore, she looked at him.
‘Won’t you ask me what she said?’ asked Tessy
‘You would tell me wen you are ready to’ responded Peter simply
‘Aren’t you curious?’ she asked, amazed by this strange character
‘I would like to know but, that would be giving you too much power. You would tell me when you are good and ready’ he said
‘Ah, this is why we fight so much. You are too controlled, you are a bore’ said Tessy, annoyed that her move hadn’t elicited much of a reaction from Peter
‘Thanks for the compliments’ he said as he lapsed into silence again
‘Okay. She was distraught and said you had been in a minor accident, she and Alhaji had gone to check you in Saint Nicholas, but you were not there, even though for some reason, they had been sure you were being taken there for treatment. She said that the she and Alhaji are worried that you might have been killed and buried somewhere so he has hired a P.I Team to look for you.’ Tessy was bubbling with excitement.
It seemed that there was a lot of money to be made all round! Everyone’s secrets were really falling into her hands. Now Tessy was sure Alhaji had ordered for boys to beat Peter up, otherwise what was he doing in the hospital for a mere employee? She mentally rubbed her hands. This was going to be good!
‘Tessy, please pass my phone.’ said Peter
‘Here you go’. She watched as he removed his sim card and tossed it on the floor.
‘Why would you do that Peter? asked Tessy, confused
‘Well, for reasons best known to me. Write your number on a slip of paper for me and put this handset on the table for me. I would need some numbers from it later, but first, I need to fix that screen’ said Peter
‘Okay, so what do we do next?’ asked Tessy.
Peter smiled as he observed that she used the word ‘We’. He was unsure if it was a good or a bad thing, but he was happy that someone wanted to be his affiliate. His dislike for Tessy had simmered down to a mild distrust.
‘Like I already told you, please do not tell Addy where I am at. In fact, if you want this thing with your other friend to work, nobody must know where I am at. I have a personal stake in it too and that is to fight Gabbo back. Otherwise, deal off’ said Peter sternly
‘It’s not that serious, Peter. I won’t tell anyone. So, consider that the deal is on. Go to your village for a bit and then when you return, you would resurface as Simi’s Fiance!’ said Tessy, excited at the prospect.
‘Good. Now, you need to leave so I can rest’ said Peter
‘Okay. I’ve been here for long enough anyway’ responded Tessy, who felt a little offended at being dismissed by Peter.
‘Thanks. Can you bring Milo for me tomorrow?’ asked Peter
‘Ok, I would’ said Tessy who began to pack her things. She bent down to quickly pick up the forgotten sim card from the ground before she said ‘Goodbye Peter, see you tomorrow’
‘See you then’ said Peter whose eyes were already closed. He hadn’t seen Tessy’s quick move. ‘Thanks for your help’
As she stepped out, Peter began to plan. He needed to perfect his initial ideas so that no one would see him coming. Not even his ally, Tessy.

The Rich Kids Of Lagos Part 50
Hey Addy, long time, stranger. Do you still live here at all?’ said Simi as Aduke burst into the flat
‘Hi Simi’ said Aduke quickly as she dashed into her room. She needed to pee urgently
It had been a tense ride with the crazy one and she had been too proud to ask the driver to pull over at one of the eateries, so that she could relieve herself. She had therefore quickly called Tessy downstairs before she had rushed up the elevator with a full bladder, hoping she did not make a mess on her own body.
She was relieved to be here now, even though she had suspected that Gabbo had only conceded in order to avoid a long drawn out argument in the presence of his driver, it was a win for her, nonetheless.
Aduke had opened the door to meet Simi seated at the dining table, glasses perched on her nose, writing furiously.
‘Wait, I need to pee’ said Addy as she rushed inside.
Relieved, she came out to tease her friend, Simi.
‘Simz, you look like a CEO. What’s up with the glasses and all these documents?’ Finally, Addy thought to herself, a normal tension free conversation. This was why she had come here. The need to return her life to normalcy.
‘Newsflash Addy! I AM a CEO! Okay, one in the making, but a CEO nonetheless. First things though! Congrats on your engamement!!! You went AWOL as soon as the news broke. How has it been? You’ve been holed up with the Mister for so long.’ Aduke looked at her friend and sensed that something wasn’t quite right. There was an air of falseness around the congrats. Was Simi jealous? No need for her to be, it had been a false engagement anyway.
‘What engagement? Oh, the one on the blog? Rubbish. They got their information wrong. Gabbo’s people will resolve that’ said Aduke truthfully.
‘Really? Hope Gabbo was not too mad?’ asked Simi who had wondered about this.
‘He would be fine. These things come with being public personality, I guess’ said Addy who waved it off.
Simi let out an air of relief. It had been a test. After all, she was the one who had spoken with Belinda Splinkeji and knew that the story had been fabricated. Simi looked at Aduke with refreshed eyes, appreciating her innocence again. This was the singular trait that had drawn her to this girl in the first place. She was so innocent and unassuming. These were traits that were sorely lacking in LasGidi circles. She decided to come clean to Aduke with regards to her plans for Peter. She owed her friend this much.
‘So, Tessy and I were saying we would talk to you about something. I better start before Tessy comes by’ said Simi
‘Really? About what?’ asked a curious Aduke
‘See, my dad needs to see my fiancé before he lets me into the business. In fact, thats what I’m working on now – a new organogram for the company when I take over’ said Simi
‘Ah, that’s great Simi. Do you think you can rise to this challenge? I think you can, just put your mind into it’ said Addy, encouragingly
‘Thanks babe. The thing is that, as we all know, I don’t have a fiance and we need one urgently. We need someone reliable who won’t steal from the organisation, someone with integrity and all that stuff, so we identified someone’ said Simi in a rush. Perhaps she should have waited for Tessy to come.
‘Great, have you contacted him? What did he say? asked Addy
‘Tessy spoke to him today and has gone to arrange for a meeting between he and I’ said Simi
‘Great stuff. Is he willing to do it?’ asked Addy, happy for her friend
‘Seat down first, I need your permission too’ said Simi
‘Why?’ asked Aduke, doubt in her eyes
‘Because the person we identified is Peter, your ex-boyfriend’ said Simi
Aduke looked at Simi, confused, wondering how Tessy could have spoken with Peter. She and Alhaji had been trying his phone number since they got to the hospital and it had been switched off. Did Tessy have another number? What exactly was going on here? Has Tessy been lying to Simi?
‘Addy, its okay if you aren’t comfortable with this. I promise you. We would just get back on the drawing board’ misinterpreting Addy’s look
‘No. it’s not even that. Did Tessy tell you she spoke with him? asked Addy
‘I saw her dial him and she went out quickly after that… I guess she did’ responded Simi

‘But I’ve been looking for him and I spoke with her not long ago. She said nothing about his whereabouts or having talked with him.’ said a confused Aduke
‘Really? Strange. So, do you think you are disentangled enough to watch me act as your ex’s fiancee?’ continued Simi, who really did not understand Aduke, but wanted to be sure her plans were still fine
‘Let me call Tessy’ said Aduke
‘Is it this serious? Ok, call her’ responded Simi
The call connected at the first ring
‘Tess, have you seen Peter ? asked Addy, straight off
‘What kind of question is that? Asked Tessy, who was surprised and taken aback. Had the P.Is found something on her?
‘Simi thinks you spoke with him and went to a meeting with him’ said Aduke
‘What does Simi know? Don’t mind her; responded Tessy in a rush
‘Why does she think this though? asked Addy
‘Ask her na, why are you asking me? Are you at home? I’m on my way home now. Tessy cut the line before Aduke could continue.
‘Simz, she said you got it wrong’ said Aduke to Simisola as soon as the connection went off
‘How can she say that? I only went into the kitchen as she connected the call. Next thing, she said she was out so that she could see him’ said Simi who now looked unsure and uncomfortable
‘Hmmm, I wonder if Tessy is up to anything’ thought Aduke aloud
‘Addy, if you still feel strongly about Peter, I can find someone else, dear. I totally understand’ reassured Simisola
‘No. It’s not that. Something is fishy here’ said Addy. Her instincts told her something was off, but she could not lay a finger on it
‘What?’ asked Simisola, not really concerned
‘Never mind dear. So what changes would you make on the organogram?’ said Addy, changing the topic
As Simi began to elaborate on her plans, Addy zoned out, reflecting on her recent conversation with Tessy. She noticed that Tessy had really not answered any of the questions she had asked her. There was definitely something fishy going on her. Did Simi know about it too? Aduke suspected Simi did and decided to leave the house. D.G had been right, she’s better off with her mum and aunty, than here right now. She would get Tessy later.
‘I have to go’ said Addy abruptly
‘Are you okay?’ asked Simi
‘Yes. I need to see my aunt’ responded Aduke ‘Later Simi’.
