Must Read: The Rich Kids Of Lagos (16+)… Part 25

***Aunty, the diesel in the generator has finished, should we buy more?*** This was a text from Titilope, the bright attendant Aduke had left in charge of running the Spa. She hissed because she had expected Titi to show more initiative. That was the only reason she had left her in charge of the business. She hoped the girl had used her initiative to buy some litres and had conserved it well.***Aduke, where are you and why is your phone off?*** Next, it was her her Aunty, Tokunboh’s text that came in. Addy knew this was big trouble because she had lost track of days. She had known Aunty Tokunboh would come in February but had not envisaged that it would be before she got a chance to put things in order. Aduke’s head began to pound immediately. She knew she was in big trouble. She knew her Aunty would have called her mother by now, to report her. This was the last thing Aduke had wanted. She began to do a mental calculation to convert the foreign currency she had remaining. She hoped the exchange rate would be good. This money should go a long way in helping her to defray the debt she owed the Spa. She just had to put a good story together. Just as she was thinking through this, another text came in from Titi again.***Aunty, Big Madam have come from London, what I should tell her? She’s asking about the money*** In another time and place, Aduke would have found the construction of the SMS funny but right now, it sent shivers down her spine. She knew Aunty Tokuboh had found out about the money. She needed to come up with the money and several lies fast.***Aunty, how I will balance the account, Big Madam is asking****. Again, it was another text from Titi who must have been put under pressure to explain the discrepancies in the accounts. With her worst fears confirmed, Aduke knew she was in hot soup. She wanted to get home right now so she could think clearly. She knew she could sort herself out of this mess. If only her brains would work. It did not seem as though her brains wanted to cooperate right now. She needed to get home fast. If only D.G would finish this side meeting he was doing on time.Just as the thought crossed her mind, she heard him call her.‘Addy, come and meet my friend, Zach’
Aduke walked across the marble floors and pasted a friendly smile on her face. She felt that a quick exchange of pleasantries would make them proceed on their journey a lot faster.
‘Hallo Addy, do you remember me?’
Addy looked into the face of Gabbo’s friend. This was a face she remembered very well. He had been chief participant in the orgy that had taken place a few months back.. An orgy that she’d had no reason to have been at, an orgy that she had been drugged to attend.
Aduke’s fake smile felt even faker as she was unable to meet his eyes. She had already seen that look on his face. The look of over familiarity that people often had when they had seen you Unclad or in a compromising position. Aduke felt awkward and immediately she shook hands with him, she excused herself under the pretext of making a phone call but not before she quickly glanced at D.G. whose face seemed relaxed. Aduke knew better because his eyes were hard. Aduke knew Gabbo very well. He was not only angry, he was raving mad.
Aduke briefly wondered why he was angry but Gabbo and his mood swings were not her primary concern right now.
‘Addy, let’s go’ said Danladi who had finally finished talking to his friend.
‘Get into the escort car, I need to place some private calls’ and before Aduke could blink, he had gotten into his nice car while she was had no choice but to get in the back seat of the toyota hilux van. Thankfully, she was alone at the back while the policemen sat in front. One drove and the other sat in the passenger seat in front.
For the first time, Aduke had a new found respect for the men who sat in these patrol vehicles with loud sirens. She knew that most of them must have embraced living a life where having a headache had become a normal part of their existence.
The first port of call was his office where they waited for about fifteen minutes before he exited. The next stop was his house. Gabbo left without saying a goodbye to Aduke and if she had initially had doubts about his change of attitude, she knew for sure that something major was up.
She knew she had to get to the bottom of it. They’d had a great flight and were chummy even when they landed. Suddenly, his attitude changed and he treated her like used tissue discarded in the waste bin. Was this because he had met with his contemporary in the airport? Aduke fumed because it hurt to be shown so clearly that you aren’t good enough.
As she began to reflect. Aduke knew this must be related to Danladi’s friend. She wondered what Gabbo’s friend, Zacharia must have said about her to make him treat her like this. Could this be related to that night at the orgy? Aduke was scared because even she did not have complete details of what had happened that evil night, many months back. This smelt like big trouble.
Between her troubles with Aunty Tokunboh and this new mess, Aduke’s heart rate picked up.
