The Story of My Life episode 26 – Final Episode

Without noticing, Roland had already found his way out of the hospital by the time we got to my father’s bedside.Amina ran towards his bed as soon as we arrived the ward. She was really happy to see him. His condition was much better than the way it was when he was admitted. The feeling was mutual as our father was delighted to see us standing there beside him. Apart from Halima who was a total stranger to him, it was like a family reunion.
My presence alone gave him the impression that I had forgiven him for not being around all that time I was growing up. Well, as much as it hurt very much, I had no reason to keep holding it against him. He’s virtually all that I have now
He told me to come close to him. I did as he asked. Then, he held my hand and looked straight into my eyes.
I felt the father and son bond that I had never felt in my entire life. It was actually the first time I was having close contact with him. Before now, we had only talked from a distance.
“Ben, I have been waiting for the right moment for us to talk and I guess this is just the time” He said.
As soon as he began talking, Halima knew that she wasn’t supposed to be there, she knew it was private family matters being discussed. She excused herself and went out of the ward.
“Ben, I have been asking you to give me a chance to be the father that I never had the chance to be to you. My story remains the same, your mother never allowed me. Now that I’m here, I want you to let me be the father that I’m supposed to be. Please” He said.
How could I deny him his responsibilities? Even if I had something against him, he was still my biological father. It was an emotional moment and I couldn’t help but shed tears as he kept pleading with me.
“Dad, what can I say? I have always longed to be with my father and now that God has given me the chance to meet you, why should I run away from it? You are my father and I’m proud of you. You are a perfect role model for me.” I said.
It was as if I have planned those words because I couldn’t even believe I had said all that. But those words really did come out from the deepest core of my heart.
“My son, there is something else you should know, I know this is not my final moment on earth, but I have to tell you” He said.
“What is it father? I asked.
“I have entrusted to you my company, I want you to be the major shareholder. I discussed it with your sister already, she was the one who even recommended you. Starting now, I’m handing everything over to you” My dad said.
I couldn’t believe it. Me? The owner of his empire? I couldn’t believe it. That actually meant that Roland will be my subordinate and will be working for me.
What a turnaround of events. I was however interested in knowing Roland’s fate, so I quickly asked.
“What about Roland? I think he is ….” I hadn’t even finished talking when my dad interrupted.
“Talking about Roland, I need you to get him arrested immediately.” He said
“What?!” Sheila and I exclaimed. We were surprised to hear my dad say that. Usually, he will be the one to be standing up for him.
“Yes you heard me, and Sheila forget about starting a family with that guy because as from today you cease to be his wife. You are not raising any family with a murderer like him.” He said.
You could tell he was very upset when he began talking about him. No one knew the reason he was saying all these.
“Daddy, but why, why all this sudden change of mind?” Sheila asked.
“That boy is the reason I am on this bed today. He pushed over the staircase when I told him about the decision you and I had made concerning the future of my company. He wanted to take my life.” He revealed.
We couldn’t believe our ears. Roland was not even around when I left home to see Amina. So how come?
“What?! Daddy, what really happened?” Sheila asked.
“He came right after you went to your room. That was when everything happened. Call for his arrest immediately.” He insisted.
All this while, I just stood there, too stunned to say anything.
“No wonder he told Ben you were already dead.” Sheila said
“He can’t get away with trying to kill my father, he won’t get away with it!” She said and stormed out of the ward.
I tried stopping her, so that we could at least come up with a plan but she was too angry to listen to me.
“Ben, what are you standing there for? Go after your sister, she might put herself in danger. That guy can’t be trusted.” My father said.
I quickly went after her. I ran into Halima in the hallway, she was on the phone. She looked very happy, like she had just heard a good news. I was really not bothered with that, all I was concerned about was the safety of my sister.
“Halima, did you see which way my sister went?” I asked
“Yeah, she rushed off to the car park. Why? is anything the problem?” she answered.
“Hmm, Roland is worse than I thought, he was the one who tried to kill my father and I think Sheila just went after him. We need to go and get her right now, she is not safe with that boy.” I said
“What?! Come on let’s go.” Halima said and we both ran off to her car.
I needed Halima’s rough driving more now than ever, and that was exactly what she gave me. Soon we were able to catch up with Sheila who was also driving at top speed. She was was headed straight to Roland’s apartment. Meanwhile, Halima called the police to report Roland as a criminal and gave them directions to where we were.
We were able to stop Sheila before she entered the house. We successfully calmed her down and convinced her to patiently wait for the police outside the house. We were very sure that Roland was in the house because his car was parked outside.
Policemen arrived in no time. We followed them as they barged into the living room. Roland was there, with a couple of suitcases. Apparently, he had been planning his escape. Surprisingly, Paulina was right there with him. It appeared that she had been an accomplice all this while. They were both immediately arrested.
Before they led him away, Sheila couldn’t landed a dirty slap on his face. She couldn’t help herself. The slap was enough to get him bleeding from the nose.
The police had taken Roland and Paulina into custody by the time we got back to the hospital to attend to my dad and update him on what had happened. My old man was doing fine so I could leave for a while and go check up on Amina.
However, Halima had something to tell me. “Ben, you know before we left here, I had a call from the hospital. It is a good news but I’ll like for Amina to tell you about it herself.” She said.
Now I was even more eager to go and see her. Leaving my sister and dad behind, Halima and I went back to the hospital where Amina was.
Well, I thought she would have been discharged… That was the good news I was expecting to hear. Nothing seemed to be different when we got there except that she was looking very alive and excited, even on her sick bed.
She reached out her arms to embrace me as I drew close to her. “Ben, I’m so happy to see you” She said.
“What is it my love?” I asked.
“I can’t believe it, Ben, it’s a miracle.” She said.
Just go on and say it already, I told myself.
“My love, tell me” I kept asking.
“Ok ok, the doctor did a scan on me. He detected my heart problem and then prescribed some medication to boost my immune system. But the exciting part is that, there is a specialist in Cuba who deals with people with my kind of heart disease. He mailed him the result of my scan and guess what the doctor said?” She said.
“What my love, what did he say?” I desperately asked
“He said I should come over for a surgery by the end of this week and the probability of me being cured is 80%!” She said.
I was filled with tears of joy. I didn’t know whether to laugh, jump or even roll on the floor in jubilation. There was hope after all.
“But Ben, I want you to do me one favor.” she said.
“I want you to come with me to Cuba. I want you by my side.” She continued.
“Of course, I would love to.” I shouted out but hey, hold on, Cuba is not Togo where I can just pick a car and go. I needed a visa to go to Cuba.
But that was an easy task. I was now CEO of one of the biggest companies in Africa so getting a visa to Cuba was going to be a piece of cake for me.
We were able to retrieve Amina’s house documents after Roland and Paulina were both found guilty of attempted murder.
My dad retired successfully and as a healthy man, with all his company assets handed over to me to handle.
Of course, Sheila was my back bone and my ‘main man’ when it came to running the company. She had a rough time getting over Roland, but eventually she did.
She is pretty girl, she definitely would get a suitable man to marry. Now that her brother was around, I would be able to charge scrutinize any man that showed interest in marrying her.
Amina’s operation was successful so didn’t have to worry about limited life any longer. Cuba was a nice place to be, so instead of the spending just two weeks, we ended up spending a whole month before coming back.
My life did turn out well in the end, right? What can I say? God sure loves me plenty.
