Peter kept trying to call Eno’s number but he could only hear the MTN Lady’s voice ‘the number you are trying to reach is switched off’. At that point, he knew that all the games were over. This smelt like hot trouble.
Tessy broke the tense silence that had descended upon the room.
‘So what are we going to do about this missing money eh Peter? Does your girlfriend have a home address?’ Aduke flinched when Tessy referred to Eno as Peter’s girlfriend and to worsen matters, he didn’t try to deny it.
‘I know her house. Should we go there?’ all he needed was a nod from Tessy and they got moving.
The three of them got into his Camry and headed towards Abraham Adesanya Estate. It was obvious that Peter had been here before because it was too easy for him to locate Eno’s bungalow. However, when they got to the house, the whole place was locked. There was no sign of life around the house but Peter was determined to try his luck and so, he began to bang on the gates but nobody came out.
Just as he stopped hitting the gate, an elderly lady came out from next door to check what the noise was about and she immediately recognised Peter.
‘Good day ma’ greeted Peter
‘How are you dear? responded the old lady
‘Fine ma’ he said
‘Are you not the one that brought Eno home the other day? asked the woman
‘It is me ma’ confirmed Peter
‘But you can see the padlock outside the gate, why are you still knocking?’ wondered the lady
‘I’m desperately trying to reach Eno but her phones are switched off’ explained Peter
‘Would knocking a locked gate help you? I think she travelled for the holidays and is yet to be back’ chastised Mama
‘Sorry ma. How about her flatmates? Do you know if they spent Christmas here?’ asked Peter
‘Yes. One of her friends is in town but she has gone to work now. Do you want to leave your number so I can give to her? asked Mama
Peter gave her his number and thanked the old lady.
With that, Peter turned around and got back into the car. He relayed his conversation with the old lady to his passengers and reassured them that he would get to the bottom of the matter.
‘Peter, I’m not interested in your detective series, all we want is our money’ said Tessy. The British Accent was suddenly back in full force.
‘Look here lady, you need to chill. You can see I’m doing the best I can to resolve this issue’ said Peter.
‘It would not have been an issue if you had delivered the errand and if your girlfriend was not a thief’ responded Tessy hotly
‘Can you keep quiet please? Is it even your money? The owner is not making as much noise as you. Please let me have some peace so I can think’ responded Peter angrily
‘Addy, cat got your tongue? Haven’t you got anything to say? urged Tessy. She needed Addy to take a position and could not understand why she was being so quiet.
‘Peter, please do everything you can to get this money as fast as you can. I’m in dire need’ said Aduke in a shaky voice. She didn’t really want all of this stress
‘Trust me Aduke. I’m on it’ said Peter
He sound just like old times. Those same words had reassured her so many times in the past and Peter had always pulled through for her.
Aduke responded by nodding her head like a little child.
The response from the back seat was a resounding hiss. Tessy made no effort to hide her anger with Peter and her growing irritation with Aduke but money needed to be made at all costs.
