The Story of My Life – Episode 21
I quickly picked just to tell her that I’d call her back… But she had bad news. Something really terrible had happened.“Ben where are you? Wherever you are now, you need to come over immediately!” Sheila said. I could tell from her voice that she had been crying.
“What is it, Sheila? Are you ok” I asked.
“It’s Dad, Ben. He just slipped and fell and now he is not moving.” Sheila said.
“What?” I couldn’t believe it. Why was this happening now? I had to go there immediately.
I left the balcony to go back into the living room where Roland and Amina were. Roland had already left by the time I hung up the phone.
Amina was sitting on the floor with her back against the sofa, still weeping. Now I was in a dilemma, I couldn’t also leave her like this.
I helped her up and decided to walk her to her room so she could get some rest. At least, that would give me enough time to go and check on my dad.
After I helped her up, Amina took a few steps just fell down to the floor. She laid there completely motionless.
“This can’t be her time God! God listen to me. Amina, Amina, get up” I prayed and tried waking her up.
I rushed to the kitchen, got some water and splashed it on her face but she wasn’t responding.
This can’t be happening. It’s not yet her time. I can’t accept this now.
At that moment, I didn’t know what to do. It was as if I had lost everything I had in life.
I blame Roland for this and no one else. He is the reason behind all this. It is about time I manned up and faced him rather than being the coward I have always been.
My Dad was not in good shape but I also couldn’t leave Amina like this. For a while, I just stayed there, not knowing what to do. I thought my life had actually come to an end. Maybe it would have been better for me if the dream I had had come to pass. Yes, It should have come to pass.
I can’t live a life like this. A life where everything I cherish just goes down in the drain within a short time.
I grew up without knowing my father and now that I just met him, there comes a bad news. Also, all my life, I thought I was in love with all my crushes until I met Amina. Within this short while, she had thought me all there was to know about real love.
Now that I have someone to love for real, her time to live is limited and at this moment, I don’t even know whether she’s alive or dead.
As depressed as I was, I checked her pulse and her heartbeat. I couldn’t feel or hear anything. Is she dead? I was still contemplating my next course of action when I heard the door to the living room open again. It had better be not Roland! I was so ready for him now.
But I was wrong. A young lady came through the door. I had no idea who she was. She was pretty though and looked quite expensive… I could tell from her general appearance and the dress she wore.
She saw me in tears with Amina’s head on my lap. “What the hell is going on here?” She asked immediately.
“I don’t know, I just hope she is alive, I can’t feel her pulse or anything.” I answered.
“And you are just sitting there, like that. Geez! Let’s rush her to the hospital already.” She said this and immediately came to help me carry her into the car she brought.
“Excuse me, but who are you?” I curiously asked.
“I should be asking you that. I don’t want you’re doing around my sister and I don’t care about that but you are clearly not her type.” She said.
“Your sister?” I asked. That came as a surprise to me. I had no idea Amina had a sister. She never mentioned her to me.
“She better be ok when we get to the hospital or you’re gonna have me to deal with; and trust me, you wouldn’t like it.” She said and drove off immediately.
She was a tough girl. She was really good on the wheels, a rough rider actually. The speed and her driving skills were simply outstanding. As much as I wanted us to get to hospital quickly, I was really scared that we might end up in an accident ourselves.
I wanted to check up on Sheila and my dad but my phone was dead. I had no option than to ask Amina’s sister for her phone.
“Can I make a call on your phone please?” I asked.
She looked at me weirdly. I could tell the insults she was raining on me in her mind, from her looks.
“Sorry, my phone is dead and I really need to make an urgent call.” I said.
She shook her head and gave me her phone “What kind of person are you?” She asked.
“The kind of person your sister is in love with.” I said.
Hold on, do you really think I said that aloud? I said it to myself without her hearing. I couldn’t have gotten away with it if she had heard me.
I called my sister, Sheila several times but she didn’t answer. That made me more worried. What could possibly be going on right now? I just pray that my dad is ok.
I kept on trying but still there was no answer. Soon we arrived at the nearest hospital. Because Amina was a medical doctor, we were attended to quickly. We were asked to wait at the OPD while Amina was rushed to the ER.
Now, I was alone with Amina’s sister. Trust me, I didn’t have a good feeling about this, I knew she would be asking me a lot of questions.
Before I could even prepare myself for her interrogation, the first question popped up.
“So I have three questions for you…” She said.
“Can’t this wait till we….” I said but she cut me off.
“I do the questioning and you do the answering. I am not in the mood to negotiate. Ideally, I should have you arrested. You know that, right? So you better answer my questions or you won’t like how I will handle this matter.” She said.
This was not going well. I was really in a mess. One thing I could tell about this girl was that she was a tough and wild person.
“Who are you? What’s the relationship between you and my sister; and what the hell happened to her?” She asked looking very angry.
Just as I was about to answer her, a call came on her phone.
She answered the call and passed the phone to me.
“It’s for you.” she said.
She was right, it was Sheila returning the call. I quickly picked up, only to hear a man’s voice on the phone.
It was none other than Roland.
watch out for episode 22
